A recent report in the New York Times from the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality has concluded that the amount of dog bites victims entering American hospitals has doubled over a 15 year period ending in 2008. The report concludes that there is also a public growing awareness that rabies can develop and an awareness and requirement of mandated health care reporting by hospital emergency rooms and medical emergency technicians. The study shows that children under 5 and adults over 65 were most likely to be hospitalized for dog bites. Rural residents are 4 times more likely to be an emergency room visitor from a dog bite than in a non-rural area. Sadly, obese drivers and passengers have an increased chance of dying while driving during a severe auto accident. Statistics have shown that an obese driver faces a 21% increased risk of death where a morbidly obese individual faces a 66% increased risk of death, according to a recent study by the American Journal of Medicine. The reason being is that crash injuries analyze a complex interaction of biomechanical factors which include deceleration, velocity of impact, seatbelt and airbag use. The effect of body mass on crash outcome is evaluated in databases showing that a large size or morbidly obese individual increases some of the most dangerous factors. Test dummies are designed to represent normal weight individuals. They do not reflect overweight, morbidly obese people. Vehicle design safety improvements in crash test dummies that could affect overweight fatalities have not been developed since crash test dummies and safety results are for average sized people. Helpful to morbidly obese people would be an adjustable seat and for these overweight people to buy larger vehicles with more space between the seat and steering column. Of course, obese dummies should also be used as crash test dummies. Remember, 1/3 of the United States population is obese.
